What is a Natural Death?
In this Dying Matters Week 2025 presentation, Dr Warrick Jones, palliative care specialist at North Haven Hospice explains the natural process of dying and the role of palliative care.
Palliative care is centered on providing a “cloak” of safety, comfort, and protection while uncertainty unfolds. It honours the person’s priorities and acknowledges processes that cannot be changed. The concept aligns well with the Māori term kōrōwai (cloak), which symbolises protection, covering, identity, and honor. Research shows that early referral to a palliative care team can improve quality of life, reduce unnecessary hospitalisations or treatments, and provide more time.
