Blessings for the unmarked graves. More than 1,600 former patients of the historic Porirua Hospital and Porirua Lunatic Asylum lie in unmarked graves in Porirua Cemetery and Whenua Tapu.
Roughly one quarter of these people were Irish. On January 31st 2027 members of the local Irish communities will be hanging Brigids Crosses at Porirua Cemetery to commemorate these forgotten people.
Come along and listen to Emma-Jean Kelly tell the story of her great-great-uncle James O’Grady and learn to make a Brigids Cross.
