As part of Dying Matters Week in Rotorua, Te Atawhai Aroha Compassionate Communities Rotorua Trust and Rotorua Hospice present a warm, open and supportive session where we can talk about death without fear or judgement. Come along, share your thoughts, ask questions, listen to others, and discover practical ways to start those important conversations with the people who matter to you.
Talking about death can feel uncomfortable, but the truth is that death is something every one of us will experience. The question is not whether we will die, but how we would like that experience to be — and what matters most to us, our whānau and the people we love when the time comes. A “good death” doesn’t mean there is a perfect way to die. It means having the opportunity to understand our choices, share what matters to us, and be supported to die in a way that respects our wishes, values, culture and the people around us.
Over 90% of deaths in Aotearoa-New Zealand are predictable ie. old age or life-limiting illnesses so we have the privilege of being able to plan for our final care. As one kaumatua (elder) said recently, “it’s great to be living to be dying.”
‘How to have a good Death!’ encourages self reflection, and discussion with family and friends, about how we can help and support each other to have a good death.
