The Eldernet Group partners with Go With Grace for Dying Matters Week

For so many people, trying to navigate the many changes that happen toward the end of life, and understanding what you might need as you age, can be very challenging. The Eldernet Group does an incredible job of understanding these needs, and helping people to explore all their options, including what you need to know before moving into a retirement village or residential care facility. Importantly, the Eldernet Group also helps people to understand why retirement villages aren’t right for everyone.
Eldernet has a wealth of information available for free through their online services and hardcopy Where from here He ara whakamua handbooks, which are distributed throughout New Zealand – and because they are entirely independent, the information is all unbiased and impartial.
Eldernet Group Director, Esther Perriam, says as we get older, it’s more important than ever to plan ahead and consider who you might need in your village.
“There is so much information to try and navigate around ageing and dying. Even the language alone can be confusing, no matter what your age. There’s so much to know and understand when it comes to ageing and it can be enormously confusing – you don’t know what you don’t know and sadly, for most people, any kind of movement in this space is usually because they’ve had a bit of a shock or a fright, such as an adverse health event or some housing instability.”
While we don’t always have control over what the later stages in life will look like, Esther says by being prepared, it gives us more control when the unplanned happens.
“While only about 20% of people end up in aged care facilities, I would strongly encourage people to talk about things now, so you are better prepared. It’s just like having a fire escape for your house - we all live in hope that our house will never catch on fire but if it does, you want to know a safe way out. Thinking about, and planning for ageing and dying, is exactly like that.”
