Childhood Memories, Proud Moments & Best Advice

To celebrate our first birthday, we wanted to help people to start reflecting on their own legacy and having conversations with family and loved ones about the important moments which shaped their lives. We asked questions based around some of the wonderful prompts in the Legacy Lab Story Book process and got so many nostalgic and heartwarming comments about childhood memories, proudest moments and advice from parents.

A huge thank you to everyone who took time to think about and record their special memories. Below are a selection of the comments we received…

My favourite childhood memory is...

  • Cooking potatoes in a bonfire on the beach
  • Fossicking amongst the rocks on one of our favourite beaches
  • Snuggling into bed with the entire family and being told imaginary stories that thrilled and delighted but knowing I was with the people I loved most, safe and warm
  • Hanging out with all my pets and making them have picnics with me!!
  • Growing up in Kaikohe and having a family farm with animals, being outdoors with nature, horses, pigs, cows, sheep, dogs loved it all!
  • Sneaking over the road to play in the gully on the willow tree. It was soothing and peaceful and solitary – and totally forbidden!
  • Rollerskating around the neighbourhood with my gorgeous neighbours
  • The freedom to head off on our bikes for the whole day in our semi rural community, with “just be home for dinner” our only parental instruction.
  • Going on Sunday outings with my mum and grandparents, we would always do something different, and sometimes that would involve a picnic with Dutch cheese, a hot water flask, all nicely packed in the chilly bin. They also loved going for cake, and sometimes we would stop for George pie in Kelston on the way home. I can sometimes still smell their car, and have fleeting moments of feelings that take me back . . I felt so loved in those outings
  • The freedom we had to play and explore around our large family orchard with bountiful deliciously ripe apricots, peaches and nectarines

What is the greatest piece of advice your mother or father ever gave you?

  • My father told me “You need to learn how to receive”. I’m still learning
  • Be a person of your word
  • My mum always solved problems with a cup of tea. Anytime, any reason, anybody – on went the kettle, out came the cups. It took me many years before I realised it wasn’t about drinking the tea, it was about making space to pause, to think, to mull over things and people and problems and celebrations. She wasn’t making tea, she was making time!
  • We are the average of the people we spend time with. Surround yourself with good people to be a good person.
  • Be kind and pay it forward
  • Treat others as you want to be treated
  • Be kind,be true ,be brave,be honest ,be you

What has been the proudest moment of your life so far?

  • Being able to produce 4 awesome humans!
  • Watching my children turn to into amazing parents themselves. That makes me the proud mum
  • The proudest moment of my life so far, has been surviving it so far
  • To watch my boys turning out to be genuine men and raise their own families
