Event Venues
This year’s hui will take place in Whangārei’s vibrant harbourside Town Basin precinct, where event venues, cafés, shops, green spaces, and accommodation are all within walking distance. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to easily reach all hui venues on foot. E-scooters and taxis are also available.

Whangārei Theatre Company
The main venue for this year’s Compassionate Communities Aotearoa Hui is the Whangārei Theatre Company building, located harbourside in Whangārei, a short walk from the Town Basin, CBD, restaurants and accommodation. The lovely community theatre space has a 160-seat theatre and an open-plan Hatea Room.
Hihiaua Cultural Centre
Hihiaua Cultural Centre has built a reputation as a world-class centre of excellence to preserve, create, display and promote Māori arts and culture. It is realising the dream of those visionaries of the past. Just a short walk from the theatre, Hihiaua will be home to some of our hui workshops as well as the community exhibition.
Hundertwasser Activity Centre
Located inside the iconic Hundertwasser Arts Centre, this purpose-built space is ideal for our hands-on workshops on Saturday, 24th May. Just a short walk from the theatre, it provides a creative and immersive setting for learning and connection. As part of our day one field trips, we’ll also visit the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery to explore Hundertwasser’s journey and how he was granted permission to be buried on his own whenua at Kaurinui, near Kawakawa.
