Saturday Workshops
If you’re staying on Saturday, 24th May, take part in a morning of optional special-interest workshops. These sessions are designed to upskill our community, allowing you to bring valuable knowledge back to your whānau and village.
Workshops have an additional cost and can be booked through Eventfinda once you have added your hui ticket to the shopping cart. You can also login to your Eventfinda account after purchasing your ticket, go to ‘My Tickets’ and purchase dinner or workshops later.

Wrapped with Aroha: A Shrouding Workshop
Experience the ritual and the practicalities of using funeral shrouds in this hands-on intuitive workshop. This is for anyone interested in natural burials, death care, and the transformative role of shrouding in healing grief and honouring life.
We’ll discuss historical and cultural perspectives, reasons for choosing a shroud, and how shroud-only funerals (without a coffin) align with NZ burial and cremation regulations. Participants will then have the opportunity to practice wrapping each other. Please wear comfortable clothing.
Timing: 1.5 hours.

Weaving Wahakura for Babies Who Are Born Sleeping
Join Wendy from AllFlax to weave a mini Wahakura (bassinet) from harakeke (flax), either to take home or to donate to Ward 3 at Whangārei Hospital. Learn about the tikanga (protocols) surrounding the harvesting, preparation, and weaving of harakeke in this meaningful and hands-on workshop.

Natural Burial Perspectives
Come and experience Hundertwasser’s different approach to death and dying at Whangārei’s iconic Arts Centre. Learn how he was given special permission to be buried on this property in the Bay of Islands from the Minister of Health in 1984. Stay and explore, after the tour. These sessions are a repeat of the connected experience from day one of the hui.

Hauora – He Kākano Ahau, I Am the Seed…
Join Kiri Neumann in this session on self-healing techniques to support resilience in any compassionate role, whether you are the giver or the receiver. This workshop offers practical tools to nurture wellbeing and sustain yourself in the care of others. This is a repeat of the connected experience from day one of the hui.

DIY Funeral Workshop
Dignified funerals can be affordable for everyone. Join End of Life Doulas, Gaylene Delaney and Sherie Sullivan, to learn how to take the lead in planning your own farewell. This Death Without Debt workshop covers essential topics, including funeral planning, wills, Enduring Power of Attorney, Advance Care Plans, probate, after-death paperwork, and avoiding professional service fees. You’ll also learn about body care and transport, when a coffin is required (and when it isn’t), cremation vs burial, and alternative, environmentally friendly funeral options.

Write Your Memoir Workshop
Have a lifetime of stories to tell but don’t know how to preserve them for future generations? Sit down with John Cosgrove, award-winning author and CEO of Legacy Lab, and learn how to craft your memories into stories.
